All around the world Hindus are known to commemorate several festivals with much zeal and devotion, sometimes to express joy and sometimes to appease the gods in the hope of attaining salvation. Rajim Kumbh Mela of Chhattisgarh is one such festival, a congregation of faith for not just Hindus but people from diverse backgrounds looking to wash their past sins.
As per Hindu mythology, Kumbh mela can only take place at a spot where the almighty himself resides. Rajim is believed to be the home of lord Vishnu’s re-incarnated form, Rajeev Lochan.
Located just 45-kilometers from the Capital City Raipur, Rajim is situated at Triveni Sangam owing to which it is considered as pure as any other holy place like Varanasi and Prayag.
A meeting of mystical minds, Rajim Kumbh Mela is known as today’s ‘fifth kumbh’ that draws lakhs of devotees from all over the country. It was actually a traditional ‘Punni mela’ observed every year at the Rajiv Lochan temple, located near the convergence of the three rivers.
After Haridwar, Nashik, Prayag and Ujjain, the fifth Kumbh mela takes place here in Rajim.
Every year, Rajim Mela starts from Magh Purnima and continues for 15 days. Religious preachers and saints gather from every nook and corner of the country, stay in special cottages made in sandy fields amid the Triveni Sangam.
Devotees throng to Rajim a day before the grand Rajim Kumbh Mela to observe and be a part of the special puja, which is performed at 3.00 A.M. on the day that marks the beginning of the celebration.
Women actively and devotionally takes part in a ritual called ‘Kalash Yatra’ bearing kumbh (pitcher) on their heads towards Mahanadi to fill the pitcher. After filling it, they again carry them back to Mahadev temple. The Yatra beautifully captures the essence of tradition and unshakable faith devotees follow with all their heart.
People visit Kuleshwar Mahadev and Shri Rajiv Lochan temples to offer prayers. Rajim Kumbh Mela is equally mesmerizing as it is spiritual. Several dreadlocked sadhus with their faces painted, such as the Nagas, Kalpwasis who bathe thrice a day, Urdhawavahurs who believe in putting the body through severe austerities are the main attractions. They come to the Mela travelling thousands of kilometers to perform sacred rituals pertaining to their respective groups.
